Momoshair Celebrity Braider to the Stars

Molecia Seasay (pronounced Mo-lee-sia) has braided and crocheted hair for the likes of Leigh-Anne Pinnock from Little Mix and British model Jourdan Dunn.

Leigh-Anne Pinnock

Born and raised on the sunny island of Saint Vincent, Molecia - owner of Momo's Hair - attributes her passion for braiding to her rich Afro-Caribbean heritage . At the tender age of 12 she began to braid her own hair, as a way to avoid her mother's styling, she laughed. Fast forward a decade and a half later, her talent and passion for braiding have earned her a feature in Cosmopolitan magazine and a devoted clientèle.

We interviewed Molecia to discover what drives her passion for hair and to see what she had to say about the art of braiding & crochet.

WIGgIT: So, what got you into braiding?

Molecia: Well, when I was a young girl I decided I wanted to experiment braiding my own hair with different styles. My passion was born then and soon I was doing my mother's, sister's and friends' hair. The thing that really drives me though is seeing the biggest smile on my clients' faces. Seeing their happiness when I've done my work is so rewarding and I love getting to know them. I also get excited at the thought of doing something different on my client's hair and watching how they come to love it.

WIGgIT: What distinguishes the service that you offer from other braiders?

Molecia: I like to provide a service that is warm, welcoming and kind. I think that's important. Clients need to feel comfortable.Although I work from home I have a dedicated salon room just for them. Spending one on one time with them, you develop a strong rapport; you get to know their likes and dislikes, their personal style.

Jourdan RianeWIGgIT: Sounds great. Your work has become very popular, too. Who is the most famous person you've ever braided?
Molecia: Leigh-Anne Pinnock from Little Mix and model/actress Jourdan Dunn are probably the top two most famous. When Jourdan contacted me asking me to do her hair. I was like yeah! I dropped everything without hesitation haha!

WIGgIT: What’s the biggest gig that you have ever done?

Molecia: I went to the MTV awards with Leigh-Anne in Spain and I saw so many celebrities there. It was humbling and eye-opening. It made me realise just how much I love my job. I'm at my happiest when I'm doing hair. It was interesting to see some celebs like Kelly Rowland using crochet! I wasn't aware she was using that and I'm always surprised to see how many people use it. It's definitely a growing trend. Even my sister back home says a lot of her clients request it.

WIGgIT: Do you think braiding is still big?

Molecia: Yeah! 100%. Braiding never goes out of season. It's always been around and it's a great all year round hairstyle, you know. I'd say it's the easiest protective style to maintain. Actually, I'm booked up for the next two months and a lot of that is for braiding.

WIGgIT: How do you decide how much to charge?

Molecia: My prices are based on the products used, the time it takes and how long thes style will last. I have to cover my time and expenses but I still want my work to be affordable.

WIGgIT: Which styles do you think will trend in 2020?

Molecia: I'd say crochet on the whole. Locs, twist, curls, passion twists. You get a great style in half the time and it looks realistic. A lot of my clients are so happy once they've tried it.

WIGgIT: Yeah, crochet is definitely the go to hairstyle for busy people.

WIGgIT: Which brand would you recommend for crochet hair?

Molecia: Mane Concept is one of the best brands that I have used on my clients.
